Thurston Illusion Show Workbook Ii Steinmeyer 464500This wonderful volume was created from a workbook that howard thurston made in the summer of 1910 or 1911 to document the technical requirements of his lavish illusion show. Photos were taken of the props held by assistants, then notes made giivng the dimensions and other pertinent details. The leather bound workboko containing these photos and notes eventually became the property of the milbourne christopher collection. Mrs. Christopher arranged for mike caveney to publish it in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies, with additional material added by noted illusion designer and historian, jim steinmeyer, which greatly clarifies the original workbook contents. Among the illusions detailed in the text and photos the fish bowl table, the barrel of diogenes, the siamese cabinet (guy jarrett's nine man production cabinet), the bangkok bungalow, the sphinx table, spirit paintings, shadow people (devant's haunted window), the automobile mystery, piercing a woman, hat and umbrella production and seeing thru a woman (the disembodied princess). Many of the photos feature legendary illusion designer guy jarrett, then an associate of thurston, pointing out the secrets of the apparatus. lAso appended to the workbooks are the story of devant's famous egg production trick (created by thurston! ), letters between thurson and selbit, nixon, yettmah, thayer and others, a detailed account of thurston's water fountain finale, and the complete transcript of thurston's 1927 show. The materials in the appendices were provided by thurston's step-daughter, jane thurston shepard. 8 x 10, smythe sewn with a three piece binding of top quality blue and black buckram with gold stamped titles on the front and spine and a matching slipcase (see scan), 253 pages on deluxe 80 pound paper, more than 100 black and white backstage images. Tipped in as a frontispiece is a full color reproduction of a rare halfsheet thurston strobridge lithograph circa 1909 featuring david devant's diogenes illusion, detailed in the workbook. The original 4 page advertising prospectus (itself a collector's item! ) ofr the workbook is also included (see scan).
